WWE appears to have canceled plans for a major match that would take place at WrestleMania 42, involving the company’s women’s division.
Previously, a match between IYO SKY and Asuka was heavily rumored for the Showcase of Immortals, but some factors were still raising doubts about WWE’s execution of those plans.
Currently, Nikki Bella’s status for the event is something that still impacts the announcement of this match. If “The Fearless” does not recover in time from her left ankle injury, Asuka and Kairi Sane would take her and Brie Bella’s place in the Fatal 4-Way Match for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship, which would make this match against SKY unfeasible.
On the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer spoke about the situation of this match, noting that there is a strong chance it could be canceled.
“Last week, this match was listed on the internal schedule, but it had not yet been announced. Asuka did a taped interview on the 4/6 RAW to promote the match. SKY posted a photo of Allegiant Stadium on her social media, suggesting the match would take place. On 4/7, when they announced the cards for both nights on ESPN, the match wasn’t there, and Sunday’s show had only six matches announced. As of the time of this report, we were told the situation is undefined and that it basically depends on the show’s length and the time available for the six matches. There is a plan—maybe not even a Plan B, but a plan—to save the match for Backlash on 5/9. But we were told that decision is still up in the air.”
Nikki Bella’s status for the event is also highly relevant, as if she is able to compete, Asuka and SKY could be left off the card, even with one match slot remaining for the second night.
On the other hand, if Nikki is out, at least Asuka, alongside Kairi Sane, will be able to participate in WWE’s biggest event in 2026.
