Pat McAfee, who returned to WWE programming on last week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown, shocked everyone by revealing himself as Randy Orton’s mystery ally.
According to Bodyslam, however, the promo McAfee delivered right after hitting Cody Rhodes with a low blow was completely improvised.
McAfee’s appearance came as a major surprise, especially since names like The Rock, Kevin Owens, and Ted DiBiase Jr. had been considered the leading possibilities.
His actions following the attack even forced WWE to change plans for the remainder of the show. As a result of the crowd’s reaction, Rhodes had to return to the ring to deliver a final statement, where he even said that he’s hearing voices too.
As previously reported, McAfee’s involvement in this major rivalry heading into WrestleMania 42 did not come from the creative team led by Triple H, but rather from Ari Emanuel, CEO of TKO Group Holdings.
McAfee is expected to fully align himself with Orton on WWE’s weekly programming moving forward.
Cody Rhodes vs. Randy Orton for the Undisputed WWE Championship is set to take place at WrestleMania 42 on April 18 and 19.
