John Cena is expected to play a major role at WrestleMania 42, WWE’s biggest event of the year, set to take place on April 18 and 19 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Cena officially retired from in-ring competition in December 2025, when he was defeated by Gunther in Washington, D.C., in the finals of the “The Last Time Is Now” Tournament during an edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event.

Since then, Cena has been focusing on personal projects and Hollywood appearances, while still serving as a WWE ambassador.

He recently revealed that he intends to take on a backstage role within the Stamford-based company, similar to what AJ Styles—who also retired from in-ring action after a loss to Gunther—has been doing.

In a recent post on his official X account, Cena, in a lighthearted tone, hinted at a significant appearance at WrestleMania 42, possibly as a Special Guest Host:

“Enjoying retirement in the sun—but I’m kidding, take a look behind me. I’m also on the road, which is interesting since we’re on the Road to WrestleMania, and Hollywood is pretty close to Vegas. Word going around is that WrestleMania needs a host, and well, I’m already heading that way. So I’ll see you at WrestleMania.”

The last time Cena appeared at WrestleMania was in 2025 at WrestleMania 41, where he defeated Cody Rhodes to win the Undisputed WWE Championship, breaking Ric Flair’s record for most world title reigns with his 17th.
