AJ Styles has shared a previously unknown detail about The Undertaker’s final WWE match, which took place against him at WrestleMania 36.

In April 2020, due to health restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, WWE had to improvise how it would present WrestleMania 36, its biggest event of the year.

One of the matches affected was AJ Styles vs. The Undertaker. WWE chose to present it as a cinematic match, calling it the “Boneyard Match.” On that occasion, The Deadman defeated The Phenomenal One after burying him in a grave.

During a recent episode of his The Phenomenally Retro Podcast, Styles revealed that after sending the gloves he used in the match—autographed—as a thank-you gift to The Undertaker, the WWE Hall of Famer returned the gesture.

“So, that meant a lot to me. After my match with Undertaker, I asked Michelle, ‘What can I give him, you know, for wrestling me?’ She said, ‘Just sign your gloves, because he’ll appreciate that more than anything.’ So I signed my gloves and said, ‘Man, thank you so much,’ and gave them to him. About a month later, his gloves showed up in the mail.”

It is worth noting that in November of that same year, The Undertaker officially retired from in-ring competition at Survivor Series.

Styles, in turn, retired nearly six years later, in 2026, after being defeated by Gunther at the Royal Rumble on January 31.
